چکیده

Two experiments were carried out to estimate the effect of sound feedback: (1) operating an assembly line simulator (Experiment-A with sound feedback of hidden events), and (2) queries in database search (Experiment-B with sound feedback of the search result quality). ExperimentA: Relevant information of hidden events (e.g., disturbances and machine break downs) was given only in a visual, and in visual and audible form. The results indicate, that additional sound feedback improves significantly the user performance and increases positively some mood aspects. Experiment-B: Individualised sound patterns (music, speech, noise) inform the user about the amount of correspondence between the requested data and the actual output on the screen (result feedback). The results of this empirical investigation indicate, that additional sound feedback does not improve the user performance, overall. But, if we differentiate between users, who prefer sound, and those, who do not, we can find significant improvements. We can conclude that sound feedback is necessary, but must be eligible.

Interaction Sound Feedback in a Haptic Virtual Environment to Improve Motor Skill Acquisition

This paper describes the concept and the realisation of a research prototype of a haptic environment that is enhanced with sound feedback to impart implicit knowledge and to teach motor skills to trainees. The sound feedback is to be understood as an additional feedback that provides information to the trainee about his or her actions in relation to objects in a virtual haptic environment. Alth...

Different effects of auditory feedback in man- machine interfaces

Two experiments were carried out to estimate the effect of sound feedback (e.g., auditory alarms) on the operator's work of a man-machine system. The first experiment tested the hypothesis of additional, but redundant auditory feedback. Twelve subjects were instructed to define queries on a simple database. In this experiment, we could not find a general superiority of auditory feedback. In a s...

On the Differential Effects of Computer-Mediated and Metalinguistic Corrective Feedback on Iranian EFL Learners’ Writing Accuracy

The present study investigated differential effect of two types of feedback namely, computer-mediated and metalinguistic, on Iranian EFL learners’ writing accuracy. To this end, based on Nelson Proficiency Test (300 A), 69 Iranian advanced EFL learners, including 45 males and 24 females, aged between 17 and 24, learning English in language institutes in Salmas, were selected randomly out of the...

MAN-MACHINE INTERACTION SYSTEM FOR SUBJECT INDEPENDENT SIGN LANGUAGE RECOGNITION USING FUZZY HIDDEN MARKOV MODEL

Sign language recognition has spawned more and more interest in human–computer interaction society. The major challenge that SLR recognition faces now is developing methods that will scale well with increasing vocabulary size with a limited set of training data for the signer independent application. The automatic SLR based on hidden Markov models (HMMs) is very sensitive to gesture's shape inf...

Age- and Gender-Related Studies on Senses of Perception for Human-Vehicle-Interaction

Excess workload in vehicle control and inappropriateness of the common two interaction modalities vision and sound requires to consider ways and means for new interaction capabilities in vehicles. We have investigated haptic force displays for transmitting feedback from vehicular services to the driving person with vibro-tactile elements, integrated into the car seat and backrest. A haptic disp...
